Gary's Hair Cut - 1st December 2006
All the photos are here
When we first had the idea of a Christmas dinner/dance we never thought it would turn into such an amazing evening. Stacey worked like a trojan to organise the evening, which included members of the Midhurst Detours, Talismen and Choirboys. There were 75 people in total, making it a fantastic turnout, and we were all dressed up to the nines which makes a nice change from club t-shirts and ripped jeans!
The evening became the platform for Gary's momentous haircut, which he pledged to do to raise money for Emma, his god-daughter, who desperately needs an insulin pump machine to control her diabetes. Emma is the daughter of one of the Detours and is very ill at the moment because the injections she currently endures are making her very sick.
Gary has had his hair in the same style for over 20 years, and is extremely attached to it. So it was a major challenge for him to even think of removing it, because he thinks it will never grow back!
We had a raffle to pick the two lucky people that would shave off the hair (one would do each side). I picked the first ticket, and the winner was... ME!!! It wasn't a fix, honest! Then Stacey picked the second ticket and the winner was Rhona. Rhona then generously offered to give up her ticket to the highest bidder in an auction. There was tough competition from Campbell (from Salisbury), Rich (from the Detours) and Sean (from the Talismen) but eventually Rich won, on behalf of a Detours consortium. The winning bid was £130! I then decided that I would also give up my ticket, if the second-highest bidder was willing to buy it from me. So I offered it to Sean and he agreed to buy it for the princely sum of £125.
So the big moment had arrived. A lady from the Talismen camp started, on the left side. Then, Lofty and Jon took over and in less than 5 minutes all the hair was gone!
Before.... and after!

In total we raised around £800 on the evening, and lots more donations are pouring in from other generous clubs and individuals so we think the total could get to around £1500 which is fantastic!
Emma and her parents, Paul and Paula, are overwhelmed with everyone's generosity and extremely proud of Gary for his efforts. They would like to thank everyone involved for their support.
