Camber Sands, July 2001
They do it down on Camber Sands, they do it at Waikiki.... (Name that tune!)
What a weekend! Scorching temperatures accompanied the ride down and the do resembled a sauna, despite the archaic air conditioning units placed strategically around the ballroom....
On Saturday, the weather dampened our spirits slightly but we were not to be beaten. The custom show had some stunning, if damp, scoots - the best of show going to the Small Faces lambretta, a result which had my total support.
Due to the inclement weather, we decided not to bother with the rideout so we hit the Queen Vic instead. However, looking for further excitement, the games room beckoned and produced some stunning displays of sporting achievement. Gary was pool and darts champ but I was the air hockey queen and wiped the floor with Gary during a hard-fought table tennis game...
Saturday night produced more dull bands - and luckily some decent, danceable music once they'd finished. My comedy t-shirt raised a few eyebrows which livened up an otherwise forgettable evening ...
Sunday morning. Bleary eyes all round. The skies were grey but thankfully it was not raining. Lost my only sweatshirt but managed to scrounge a lovely woolly jumper to avoid hypothermia on the ride home (thanks, Paul!).
Conclusion: The rally could not possibly live up to my ridiculously high expectations, and given the weather conditions it could have been a washout. Highlights were Saturday afternoon's games and post-midnight boogieing - and the ride there and back - it's a lovely distance and we had a good laugh on the way home. There's nothing like a hot bath after a rally, and today was no exception.
