Surrey Custom Show and Parts Fair - Dorking, June 7th 2008
Lee set off to Dorking about 15 mins before Daniel and I left in the car, the theory being that we'd catch him up on the way, or meet him there. However, at the top of the A29 I got a phone call and he'd once again run out of petrol! Following the shenanigans on the Isle Of Wight (running out of petrol TWICE in a weekend) you'd think he'd have learnt hs lesson, but apparantly not. He'd put a can in the back of the car so I caught him up, he refuelled and we got to Dorking Rugby Club without further incident.
It was a lovely location, just out of town in rolling countryside. The numbers were up on last year and I immediately bumped into Sarah from Worthing who was queuing for her breakfast bap having camped the night before. There were quite a few tents already from people who'd gone for the whole weekend and there was a really nice vibe, similar to the old days, with people just chilling out and chatting and enjoying the good weather. We had a nice catch-up with Sarah and then looked around the scooters which arrived throughout the course of the day. It wasn't really a formal custom show, just a collection of various scooters that were judged at some point in the afternoon.
There was a dyno, which was kept busy and making lots of smoke from thrashed exhausts. Nobody seemed to be able to explain to me how it actually measured various aspects of a scooter's performance. Eventually, after chatting to Dean Percival, I was satisfied that it wasn't just magic, or the 'onboard engine management system' that the dyno lady tried to palm me off with. I don't know much about Lambrettas but I know they certainly don't have an onboard engine management system!!!!
We nipped to a nearby Frankie & Benny's for lunch (with Lee not fancying the hog roast on offer at the rugby club) and then spent most of the afternoon people-watching with Clare and Tulin. I had to take Daniel back before the prizes were given out, so had to wait for Lee to get home to hear that he'd picked up the Best Brightwork Chroming trophy.
It had been a lovely day and actually made me want to camp, although the weather played a huge part in making it so good, so if we go next year we'll only do it if it's likely to be nice and sunny again.
